Barbed Wire deters stock from rubbing against the fence, one of the major causes of fence damage. Generally, barbed wire is used in conjuction with prefabricated fencing to construct a dual purpose sheep and cattle fence although, in cattle country, fences constructred soley of barbed wire are still the rule. There are two types of barbed wire - high tensile pattern and Iowa pattern.
